You've fallen for one of our beautiful handmade rings, but how do you know what size to order? It can be really confusing and a little daunting - what with there being 21 sizes from F to Z to choose from (plus the availability of half sizes!).
Fortunately you've come to the right place for advice on how to determine the perfect size for your new ring. At iapetus we've over 16 years experience helping our customers to find their favourite rings and making sure they fit just right.
We've put together a list of 7 dos and don'ts below to guide you to ring sizing perfection, but before we get into those let's say the most important thing first...
We know you're excited and you can't wait to order your fabulous new sparkling ring, but please don't guess your ring size. We promise a trip to see us at iapetus gallery or your local jeweller will be well worth your time. Getting your finger correctly sized means your new ring will fit first time and you'll save both time and money in resizing it later.
1. DO make sure you're at a comfortable temperature when getting sized.
The temperature of a room can drastically change the measurements by whole sizes as your fingers will swell accordingly - if your hands are too cold your ring could be half a size too small! Also take into consideration that both pregnancy and conditions like arthritis can also impact the sizing.
2. DON'T use printable or plastic sizers you find online.
These are often unreliable and vary in sizing so an accurate result just isn't possible. Similar to this, do not use a strip of paper or a piece of string to measure your ring size either as both can stretch and break leading to wrong results.
3. DO make sure the ring sits on your finger comfortably.
Your ring should fit snugly enough that it won't fall off when wearing it, but still be able to fit over your knuckle when you take it off. The trick when you try on a ring is to give your hand a bit of a shake - if the ring feels comfortable but you're confident it's not going to fly off then it's right.
4. DON'T get sized with a very different width of band.
The wider the ring, the tighter it will feel on your finger, so if you're having a wider/slimmer band than the ring sizer sample, you may even have to go up or down a size. If you are trying on samples to help with sizing, make sure to use ones that are similar in width to the ring you wish the purchase.
5. DO check with the jeweller how they measure the size.
Rings are measured by either the 'centre' or the 'leading edge' - your jeweller should know what this means! The difference may not be huge but it will feel quite different when being worn. Here at iapetus we use centre sizing to measure and for all of the rings that we stock.
6. DON'T order a ring if you're not sure of the ring size you have selected.
Our rings are made to order and therefore are non-returnable. While many of our artists can resize the rings, there would be a charge to cover the time and postage costs.
7. DO be aware of non-UK sizing.
Other countries and international jewellery chains may use a different scale for measuring rings. If you know your size in another country's system, you can use a ring size converter like this to figure out your UK size.
For any further information, every ring on our website contains our answers to frequently asked questions in their descriptions which may be of help. You can also get in contact with us for help via email, giving us a call, or popping into iapetus gallery in Great Malvern to say hello.
